Now that is a question that's somewhat difficult to answer, as there is no one right answer.

Many sources offer different answers, and depending on the source, there are 189, 191, 192, 193 or 194 independent countries in the world today.

The United Nations has 192 members (including Montenegro and Serbia - the two newest nations) but that number does not include the Vatican, an independent nation.

The US State Department recognises 193 independent countries around the world. but that list of countries reflects the political agenda of the United States of America. As an example, it does not include Taiwan as China claims that Taiwan (the ROC) is simply a province of China.

The latest World Almanacs use 193 countries, which is probably the best answer, but what about Palestine? Greenland? Western Sahara? Chechnya? Tibet ? Cabinda?

The political world is constantly changing and the definition of a country is difficult . If so what about Somalia?

As for the richest country it is the same scenario, depending on which criteria you are using the positions seem to change also . But I will say the USA is because even those countries with oil they still want the USA to come and buy it otherwise they will starve . If donations are wanted in this world everyone looks at the USA first . Same as military, Same as tourism etc

There are different ways of defining the wealth of a country. Other answerers have said America, Russia and Luxembourg - The USA is definitely the richest in terms of total wealth, but Luxembourg has the highest wealth per capita (per person) though it's very small. I would think if you include Monaco and Vatican City, they're even richer per head because they have such tiny popualations. This is also true of some tiny Pacific island states like Nauru, which have mineral deposits but very few people.

It may be that Russia is potentially the richest country because of the huge natural resources, most of which have not been exploited yet.

I don't know.
I know the U.A.E. is rich because how much oil they find.
Saudi Arabia has oil too.
If you're in the royal family you'll have a large of chance of being rich.
Dubai doesn't have a lot of oil but gets it's money from the businesses that come to Dubai.
