No, racism involves believing that you are superior to another race and also inflicting some form of harm (whether) verbal or physical onto someone else because of their race.
There are, unfortunately enough of those types around. You are not racist.

I don't know about racist, but I get annoyed at times when this happens, until I realize I'm just being nosy and paranoid. Most people have much more important things to do than to talk about me, so whatever they are saying to each other is none of my business. I also believe that if you are going to live and work in ANY country, you should make a concerted effort to learn to speak and understand the language. If I had to move to France for my job, and were planning on being there for more than a year, I would make every effort to learn to communicate in French.

Of course it doesn't. It is rude that they talk in the native tougue when the language here is English and they can obviously talk English. They talk in their native language because they know you will not understand what they are talking about. For all you know, they could be making racist remarks about you or any of your colleagues. I am not saying they are but how would you know. A racist is someone who acts or says something which would be considered offensive to the other person who is of a different race to yourself about their race or colour. All you are doing is saying to us that you think its rude and I totally agree with you, it is rude and disrespectful. As you find it offensive, you could say they were being racist against you.

well, no... I understand how that can get irritating.. I've been there too! I think if a person wants to work/live in America, then they need to speak english... now hear me out... thats wonderful that they want to continue their own language! but i think in public places, especially work, they should speak what everyone else in the work place is speaking... i find it unprofessional to start talking in other languages so that others won't understand... i also think its rude... at times i don't let it bother me, but when its continual, all day, then it has to stop... i realize some are trying to learn english and its hard, but when they start to speak their own language so much, how will they learn english.. or the language they are trying to learn... idk. i just rambled a little... but it makes sense to me..
it happens with many languages... spanish, hindi, greek, etc. etc.

First question. If you worked with a group of German people, would it annoy you similarly if they spoke in their own language? If the answer is no, then maybe there is a racial root in your objection. (Why don't they get a good English education like me !!!) The people are not necessarily being rude. Maybe they are attracted to this place of work because there are a lot of other Hindi speaking people there and they like communicating in the mother tongue.

No, but it is annoying especially if they are working with you, I suppose they either don't speak too good English or they are just lazy, As it happens I live in the French part of Switzerland so I have to speak French, (with o lousy accent) but when I hear an Italian or a Yugoslav ranting on his mobile in the supermarket it drives me nuts,

I think it's incredibly ignorant to speak in a foreign tongue in Britain. But I also think we're incredibly ignorant when abroad too - we expect people to speak our language and if they don't we shout at them as though they were naughty three year olds.
I'm not racist, but I do think that if they want to live and work in Britain, they should at least learn the language and use it when in public / work situations.

The language of this country (UK) is English and should always be spoken, and if people cannot speak it they need to be taught to speak it from day one.
You are not being racist because you are not insulting anyone, just pointing out a fact.

Not racist, just uncomfortable and perhaps insecure. It is a shame that you don't feel you can speak up. It's only natural that people want to speak in their native language and perhaps they are not aware that this makes you feel the way you do.
