You shouldn't have a difference in mpg from the gas you use. Check your car's owners manual and it will tell you the recommended fuel to use.

Premium should only be used if your car is a sports car with a high compression ratio or if you are having engine knock.

Contrary to popular belief, a higher octane makes the fuel burn slower, not faster. What this does is allow the piston to create a higher rate of compression on the fuel before combustion. So, you get better performance because the fuel is more explosive in the cylinder.
This will create minor problems for normal cars because they are not designed to withstand the higher compression ratio. And it could possibly cause premature engine wear in some cases.

The higher octane helps older cars with engine knock because the knock is caused by pre-combustion in the chamber. The higher octane retards the burn enough so the fuel is ignited at the right time. It's the poor man's way of fixing engine timing.

Octane is the stuff in gas that makes it powerful regular gas has an octane of 87 premium has 92 to 93 octane if you calculate the difference of 6 octane... then divide 6 by .87 you get about 6.9 percent increase in octane... So technically you should get a increase in mileage of about 7% but I have found that the increased cost of premium gas is usually more then 7% so it will never be more economical to buy premium...

the quantity denotes the octane score. incredibly that's extra bang for the greenback. a some distance better octane could have a some distance better capability interior the ignition area of a 4 stroke engine. that's all approximately carbon compounds. some engines desire larger octane--like race automobiles, jets, etc. Jet A gasoline is a hundred some thing octane. In a conventional accepted motor vehicle, your proprietor's handbook will inform you which of them gasoline you need to use to get the final mileage. in case you have a severe overall performance Porsche or Vette then you will could desire to apply larger octane because of the engines larger compression ratio. in case you utilize a decrease octane in a severe overall performance engine, you get pre-ignition. In different words the gasoline/air mixture interior the cylinder ignites earlier the spark and since the timing is misguided, it messes up the engines overall performance. Chevron/Texaco company fuels are related to the final for overall performance and that i think of BP/Amoco Corp's gasoline has been rated the cleanest. And in fact i think of there are purely like 5 manufacturers of gasoline besides. Chev/Tex, Exxon/Mobil, BP/Amoco, Sunoco and another. those 5 make gasolines for each human being.

Regular is fine. unless you have a turbo. For the difference in price it is more economical. Premiun gas has a higer octane rating, more detergents and cleaners in it. Once in awhile put in a tank of premium or a fuel injector cleaner, otherwise save your money.

the only reasion to use premium is if your car has high compression and needs it. if your car runs fine on regular don/t waste your money on premium.
