I don't mind talking to somebody in India instead of in the U.S., but I don't feel very confident that the problem is going to get solved. That's not the fault of the people on the phone, I just think that there is probably very little communication between the office in India and the company in the U.S. As for people's English, believe me, there are lots of people working as customer service in the U.S. that speak worse English than the people on the phone in India. I think companies hire them just to frustrate callers and make us stop calling for service.

I hate it with a passion.

Any firm that outsources their customer "service" to an overseas call centre loses my custom if there is ANY way I can get an alternative.

I have less than perfect hearing and when you combine that with a foreign accent - I end up saying "pardon" every other sentence. It infuriates me.

Worse still is this idea that they must engage in small-talk. Having someone in India asking me about coronation street is bordering on the surreal.

Britain now has an APPALLING overall concept of customer support - my local council even outsources enquiries about building regulations to an overseas call centre. what should have been a 2 minute enquiry to a local person was almost a 20 minute call talking to someone who thought a garage was for keeping animals in.

If they really must use overseas call centres, they should DEMAND that the people staffing the 'phones have CLEAR practiced English - such that there is a sporting chance people can easily understand them. In answer to your question, Polish folks are often easily understood, ditto Russian. Not sure about Afghan folks, I don't know enough to make a comment.

I am not a great fan of Nat-West but they ended up with my business because I got hacked off being trasferred to India each time I need to talk with my old bank.

WOW... look at all the choices.. if it is a JOB where you are guaranteed an hourly wage, NOT some junk that you sign up for, spend countless hours of time and effort spamming your link, just like everyone here is... AND if you live in the US, just send me an email and I will send you a link to two sites that offer legitimate 'tele commute' jobs.... NEVER pay to work a job..... and consider it this way ... when did you ever go into Wal-mart or McDonalds, ask for an application and someone said "that will be $5.00 ($10-$197) for the application." Several of the sites offer "customer service" work. I know, because I worked for one myself while I got my home based business up and running. They are out there, you just don't see many advertised because they don't have to... usually people come through as referrals. Also bear in mind that these companies have an application process, interview process, some have tests you have to take and they don't hire just everybody who applies, unlike the 'fee' grabbing companies you DO see advertised and spammed everywhere. They are all recruiting from Africa now because employment is even cheaper,They'll be justifying their lack of morals and ethics by saying that they are investing in third world countries next.
By the way I'm not biased I have trouble understanding most accents including English.

I dont ask for much just somebody who speaks the same language as me who can understand me.

1 trained person who speaks english is worth 10 indian script readers.

my company tried it, got sooooo many complaints so we moved back to the UK, trained the staff better so we need less of them and it is now cost effective.
