Yes, we do know the area of the earth covered by water. See the second site below. But, as an exercise, let's figure it anyway.
We know that the earth is approximately spheroidal in shape. So, we can use the volume formula for a sphere to calculate its volume. From calculus, we can use that formula to derive a formula for the area of any sphere.
V = 4/3*pi*R^3, where V is the volume and R is the radius.
The area of the sphere is the derivative of its volume. Hence
A = dV/dR = 3(4/3)*pi*R^2 = 4*pi*R^2
From the first website below, we find that the radius of the earth, after doing some conversions from meters to miles, is approximately 3963.19 miles. Plugging that into our above derived formula yields:
A = 4*(3.14)*(15706874.98 mi^2) = 197278349.70 sq mi.
The second website below claims that 29.2% of the earth's area is land mass. Subtracting that from 100% leaves 70.8% of the earths area occupied by water.
All that remains is to multiply:
0.708*(197278349.70 sq mi) = 139,673,071.60 sq mi.
That's equivalent to having an ocean in the shape of a square with each side being about 11,818.34 miles long. That's a huge mass of water indeed.
If we compare our answer to what the second website says is the accepted value, we are less than 0.2% off in our calculations, which is not too shabby in the world of science and mathematics.

The world is approximately spherical
with an average radius of 6367 km.
The total surface area of a sphere = 4 * pi * radius ^ 2
Thus, total surface area of world = 4 * 3.1416 * 6367 ^ 2
= 510 million square kilometres
Total area of land is known to be 150 million sq.km.
Therefore, the total area of water
= 510 million - 150 million
= 360 million sq.km.
So approximately 30% of the area of
the world is land and 70% is water.

from memory, the Earth surface is 71% water
.... I am not sure if that includes seas which some countries may include in their land area
Also, some countries may include their sovereign area to include an extended area out into the ocean.
Depends if you get geography stats or political stats.
