I'd have thought "What do I do now?" by Sleeper would be better.

No. The song's only good feature is the orchestration. Otherwise it's a dreary directionless plod. The video also sold this song. The classical piece on it's own is pleasant enough but forms a musical loop. 'The Drugs Don't Work', 'Sonnet' and 'Lucky Man' are much more substantial songs with vastly improved song structures. 'Gravity Grave', 'History', 'Blue' and 'This Is Music' are better still though hardly national anthem material. Being serious now, the one song that springs to mind to fit the bill is 'The Colours' by The Men They Couldn't Hang. Never heard of them? Shame on you.

we need a new anthem. why should i be considered less british because i will not stand for a song that asks a fictional character to look out for the latest in a long line of thieving bullies that have robbed my people for centuries. but i can't agree that bitter sweet symphony is it. if i think of one more appropriate i will let you know.

No it shouldn't as the song was nicked from the rolling stones and they never received any money from that song as a result. Portishead doing a cover of zip-e-di-doo-da should be the national anthem (according to Bill Bailey)
