The coil can have the effect of causing your periods to be heavier and more painful. You could try another method of birth control such as Implanon - an implant placed under the skin - they last for up to 3 years, although if you suffer heavy periods its recommended you get a new one before this time. I had it and once its in you can forget about it! However, the first 5 weeks I did bleed constantly then I was completely regular again. Other people I've heard of having this had no adverse effects whatsoever. Trial and error I'm afraid is your best bet. Good luck!

Everyone reacts different to the hormones with it, I have had mine for 3 years and love have not had a period since it was put in, I will be using this again. I have read that it can take upto a year for it work with your body but if you don't want to try to wait it out you really should contact your doctor and see what your other options are this doesn't seem like the one for you.

I bloody hated the Merina coil! i had it in for a year and i bled for over half that time. the longest period i had was 8 weeks at which point the doc decided to remove it. it didn't work right for my mum either. some people it just doesn't work for. I'm now on cerazette mini pill and i haven't had a period since june.

i'd recommend going to your doc and making them aware of the situation. my doc said give it a year and see how i get on, i didn't and its gone. i'm much happier on the cerazette!

good luck

I have had mine for 5 years (I am on my second one), and never had a period that lasted that long. On the contrary, only will have a bit of spotting for perhaps 2 days. To me it sounds very strange and I would definitely consult a doctor, if only to be on the safe side.....
