The other day when i was takin my 6 year old daughter to school i heard her friends'(also 6) mothers discussing whats the best mobile phone or the best MP3 player or whats the best LCD or plasma tellys to get their 6 year olds!!!!!!!!!!! Now come on a mobile phone for a 6 year old a plasma telly. Am i the only one who thinks this is a bit much????

My daughter has asked for a bike, skates and a pram and doll and thats it. Which by the way i would only be to happy to get her as they are outdoorsy toys that will last her right through the summer and keep her fit and healthy.

Are parents at fault or are we gettin all this pushed on us by the adverts ????

Children grow up now days thinking the world owes them these things and don't understand why some don't get them. It's a very dangerous thing to raise a child and giving them things like this. It really doesn't matter what I got as a child but just for an example, I used to get a quarter and a Baby Ruth candy bar. I worked for everything I've gotten and for well over 40 years of my life I was self employed and have done well. I'm now retired and living very happy knowing the world owes me nothing. If I get anything it's because I've earned it. Kids in some countries are glad and lucky to get fresh drinking water. Some children grow up not even knowing this and not caring about it anyway. It's a sad situation and no one is at fault but the parents who give their children way, way too much.

I agree with you xmas used to be simple for parents, girls got dolls,a tea set ,pram and some nick nacks ,and the boys would get footballs cars & a garage this is what we got and it was great .
Now my kids 10 & 8 want the latest mobiles, games console mp3 players, dvd players and expensive clothes and more if i was to buy everything on these 2 lists it would cost me almost a grand.I think that tv advertising is to blame when they see it on telly they want it. Mine have been told that santa has £150.00 each for all the boys & girls.( i still think that this is a bit much ) and they will have to see what they get.But i feel sorry for the kids who won't get much and we always donate money or toy's to our local church and our children know they are fortunate to get what they do ,but pier pressure also rears it's ugly head at this time of year too.

O no parents are definitely to blame. I find it absolutely ridiculous that a 12 year old have a cell phone never mind a 6 year old. The thought that a parent would fight a school because the teacher would not allow the cell phone in class is atrocious.

Children aren't allowed to be children! Parents who have to play the game "keeping up with the Jones" are pushing way too hard and making their children grow up way too fast.

Advertisements are the ones in your home buying the cell phones and the MP3 players. If the parents can't put their foot down and stand up to their (younger, much smaller children) then that is where the problems lie. Your a parent be a parent don't let your children parent you!!

Yes Parents are at fault. what are these parents going to do when the children get to be teenagers and they already have all this stuff. even with all the money in the world there is only so much stuff in the world that children would like. I think they are digging themselves into a deep hole. I think what you are doing is the best things. parents forget to tell children what Christmas is really about. so the children grow up never knowing and appreciating it and that's where the cycle begins.

when i was a kid (not so long ago) i remember getting loads of christmas presents. i got computers and bikes and models and scalexrtic and sweets and goodies and games and toys and so on

christmas is for the kids. theres only one day a year when you can have chocolate for breakfast and its CHRISTMAS!

its fair to say that some kids get spoiled, and some get stuff they dont need. but you are supposed to spoil kids at christmas. its also worth noting that they stay out of your hair on boxing day, lol

yeah, mobiles and plasma tellies are not for 6 year olds, but what age do they have to be before theyre old enough?

spoil em, go on, you know you want to, and its just one day a year.

BUT...

christmas isnt the time of year to go out an get a loan. your kid will know if you cant afford it. youll teach them bad habits.
all in all, keep the freezer stocked, dont get further in debt, and spoil em whatever way you can, just for christmas.

hohoho

Merry Christmas

If parents allow there kids to have all this stuff, then there's a problem. I wonder what happened to all the toys KIDS use to play with. When i was young i loved to play with my toys up until i was like 14. Now a days kids like u said 6 are having phones, i-pods, and all these high-tech gad jets. I'm right there with u on this one. Parents should teach there kids to be kids and wait for when there older to have all the other stuff. U can only be a child once then when it's gone that's it and trust me ur'll be looking for it later on in life!!!!!!!!!! Parents let the kids be kids!!!!!! This was a great question!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kids do get far too much these days and it is always the expensive stuff that they are after. Xmas has gone barmy with the amount that everything costs and people put themselves into debt just to keep up with the jones. Now after all that I am going shopping tomorrow to get my grandchilds (only got one) xmas presents I help out with her stocking as money is a little tight for her parents so I am as bad as everyone else....

Yes we are at fault. It is way too much and not only that but it leaves us parents in debt and miserable after that just to make the kids all so happy. It is freaking insane, I think that is why I despise Xmas day. It makes me feel so bad because of what I spent and their reaction to what they got. I did go over board last year and it is my fault. This year I am hoping to be more conservative with my gift giving ideas.

Well I agree about 6 year olds getting suck items as you listed.

And most kids do get too much for Christmas, but it's all a vicious cycle of rich vs. poor and whoever can afford it, gets it.

Most kids who grow up with less money usually don't ask for a lot, or try not to, because they know that they wont be able to afford it.

And the kids who have a fair ammount of money will ask for more and usually get it too.

So, yes, children usually get too much for christmas.

My daughter is nearly 6 and there is no way I'd even consider getting her a mobile at her age. Why do they need it? I can understand older children getting them for security reasons but at 6 she shouldn't be too far away from her own door. It is crazy and I think parents are to blame for the outrageous demands children make.
