I think there is almost an even amount of males who fear spiders as there are females. I am a female and i love spiders, they are so fascinating and such beautiful creatures. A lot of people don't see what i see though, they see fangs, eight legs and venom. Some men probably pretend to not mind spiders so that they look tough in front of women. There definitely are a lot of men afraid of spiders and just as many women. A fear definitely isn't hardwired into our brains. Many factors contribute to why people have fears. Maybe your parents were afraid of spiders and you grew up seeing them as something to fear. Or maybe a bad experience caused the fear.

They have to. It has something to do with the Education of the genders. Look: People think it's "ok" and "normal" if a woman is afraid of spiders - if a man is afraid of spiders, he is laughed at. You know what I mean? A man has to be bravely.
Personally me was afraid of spiders too at an early age. But one day I killed a little little spider. Then another day another one which was a bit bitter. And so I slowly lost my fear. And now I also become rid of these things. A woman doesn't has to lose her fear - no one wants her to to that. :)

Sorry for my bad English, I'm from Germany :)

Why would anybody be afraid of spider at all? I think because we have drifted away from nature and ironically are frighten of what we prey on. I received the idea from a cat I had just moved into a new landscape, when I suddenly was stricken by the sight of a roach on my just wiped out kitchen cabinet. I hollowed as hard as my lungs permitted. The cat came along . It looked at me; then, he gazed from me to the bug and simply killed it and went on its way. I learned my lesson. How could I be "in danger" if my size and resources were far more powerful? I understood I was only projecting "human social and psychological values" to the careless bug. In perspective, if you really want to find out why spiders (associated to female features) bother us, search among the myths our western culture has developed as a means to undergo social interactions. Personally, however, I think the best approach to deal with insects is to kill whatever affects you in a direct manner (mosquitoes biting, crickets or moth chewing your clothes) and allow those that do not get in your way to go on theirs.

HA!! I've seen some men scream like little girls and run at the sight of a tiny little spider! I can't stand spiders myself-and actually feel physically ill when confronted by one. I think it just depends from person to person.

Men are less afraid of spiders than women because men always want to be brave of getting rid of insects to prove to women that there is nothing to be scared of in this world. However, women should not be afraid of spiders either, because there are three good reasons why we women shouldn't be afraid of spiders:

1. SPIDER-MAN
2. SPIDER-WOMAN
3. SPIDER-GIRL

Blokes just learn to show it less.

I'm not afraid of spiders, but then I'm not afraid of much at all (including death). About the closest thing that gets me is mosquitoes... can't stand the damned things.
Spiders don't phase me in the slightest.

I'm not... I like spiders.. I used to catch grandaddy long legs as a kid and let them crawl all over me..
Also me and my brother as a kid used to catch black widow spiders on our farm and have them fight scorpions to see which one would win...
I was never afraid of spiders.. I think I aught to have been though.. or at least my mother thought so

Counter question

How can you pour hot wax onto your body parts, wait for it to cool before wrenching it and any offending hair off in one foul, painful, swoop - and still be affraid of spiders?
