It means not making assumption based on predisposition.
It means putting yourself in some one else's position in order to feel how they feel. Like walking a mile in their shoes before passing judgment.
It means understanding that most of us are the result of the environment born into.
What it means is less important then what you do.
People all too often look for meaning while failing to apply sympathetic understanding through the ways they gain their means.

It sounds like pycobabble for almost being empathetic.
Sympathy is what you give to remove yourself from a position of feeling that persons anguish. It is almost condescending in my book. TUT TUT there There. Feeling sorry for someone is a waste of everyones time.
Empathy is a positive approach where you try and understand what has affected another and put yourself in their shoes. Attached to Empathy is listeneing and HEARING what the person is saying .
