yes. If you've had sex then you need to get a pap smear done every year to check for cervical cancer and other problems that may occur in the female reproductive system

You could see a family dr (general practitioner) but women over 18 and/or sexually active should get a pap smear done every year. Also, the doctor should give you a breast exam (by hand). When you are about 40-50 years old, you will have yearly mammograms.
So basically, there are a lot of female health issues to address. You could do this with your general practitioner but a gynecologist is trained specifically in this field.
Hope that helps!

mari

You must be in the US as in the UK we don't even see a gynaecologist when we're pregnant, at least I have never. We are referred to them if we are having problems in that area or we have had an abnormal smear result or something like that. There is no law to say you have to go, it is better for your own health to be checked but ultimately the choice is yours to make.

Yes you do!, you have to go every six months or yearly to get a pap smear, That test reveals any abnormalities like cancer or any other concerns that may not show in a normal pelvic exam.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists or ACOG recommends that Pap smear testing begin within three years of sexual intercourse, or by age 21 even if not sexually active.
The ACOG further recommends annual Pap smears continue until age 30 when healthy women who have had at least three consecutive normal Pap smears may begin to have the test every two or three years or as often as their gynecologists suggest. The following symptoms always indicate you need to see your healthcare provider:
-abnormal and/ or persistent vaginal discharge
-bleeding between periods
-bleeding after sexual intercourse
Although annual Pap smears are not always required after age 30, annual pelvic exams are still necessary to check for any other changes or infections that may be present. The ACOG established these guidelines with full knowledge that HPV causes cervical cancer. Did you know that with each new sexual partner your risk of getting HPV increases by 15 percent? This means that having multiple sex partners raises your risk of HPV substantially. According to the ACOG guidelines for Pap testing women diagnosed with HIV or other diseases or conditions that lower immunity should continue having annual Pap smears after age 30. The greatest single reason for the occurrence of cervical cancer is not having Pap smears as often as recommended by your gynecologist. The majority of women diagnosed with cervical cancer have not received annual Pap smears, in fact, for most it’s been five years or longer. Sadly, these women are usually at an advanced stage of cancer when they receive diagnosis.

You should be going to see a gynecologist starting in your mid teens, or when you become sexually active. You need to get pap tests done yearly, as well as keeping up with your general female health.

Depends what country you are in. In the US, it seems common to see one for a smear test. In the UK smears are done by nurses. I am 17 weeks pregnant and have had numerous smear tests and other sexual health tests and haven't seen a GYN in my life!

No, you don't have to see the GYN if you're not pregnant. All the tests that the GYN would prescribe for a non-pregnant woman can also be prescribed by a general practitioner or a internal medicine doctor.
Usually, they would refer you to the GYN for any problems that come up.

Yes, to have a smear test.
If you catch cancer cells early enough, they are often not dangerous. So GO GET CHECKED!

You need to have a pap smear done annually, whether a gyn does it or your GP.
