man, you are asking who's better a legend or an 80's pop tard with a mullet.
it's the boss man. born to run is one of the greatest records ever made. everyone knows this. cougar would be lucky to compose 10 songs that stand up to born to run in music history.
coug's biggest hit in years past happens to be a cover song, wild nights by van morrison. ironically, bruce's biggest hit ever was a cover of his song, "blinded by the light" by mannfred mann.
as for bruce no longer making great music?????????? the rising. nominated for album of the year in 2002, and he should have won. the rising is one of the greatest albums to come out in the last 10 years. devils and dust is also really good, kind of a a throwback to his early stuff he first did without the e streeters. seeger sessions are really fun too.

I don't really care for either one. Springsteen seems to always be yelling out his lyric without any real vocal talent. Cougar might sing a tad better without reaching the level of a good singer but his writing style is just not with it. As far as popularity I would rank them in the lower half because there are just too many great musicians out there reaching the peak levels of vocal and musical talent that appeals to a wider audience as well.

This has nothing to do with their musical ability, but my choice would have to be John Cougar. The way that he holds the Farm Aid concerts each year to help the farmers in America's Heartland is wonderful.

John Cougar Mellencamp can rock

Mellencamp, as indicated by the fact that he's still making music that rocks, is more personable, and his live shows are superior. Bruce's time has past, and he should thank his lucky stars for royalties from the hits he DID have.

I couldn't choose between the two...l love both of them. Their songwriting themes are similar-common, working people-middle America. Both put on great shows. I have never been disappointed by either. While they may be past their prime as far as popularity goes, they both are still extremely talented.
