How can a criminal who has committed a crime against society severe enough to justify being locked up, get compensation against his punishment?
Are we going to have criminals sue because they're being deprived of sex? Shopping?
The judge said it amounted to torture. While I agree that coming off drugs is dreadful, how can someone else be held accountable for your own stupidity? Taking drugs harms you! If you go to prison, you have to go without!

I asked a similar question yesterday and completly agree with everything you say - it really does defy belief.

Plus, what sort of messege does this send? e.g. its ok to take drugs, kill someone and go to prison because when you get there you can either carry on taking drugs living in luxery at the taxpayers expense or sue the state and win loads of cash.

Enough is enough - this government is a complete farce and really has lost the plot, my vote will be going elsewhere (anywhere in fact that is not Labour) at the next election. I hope others do the same.

I agree it is not only crazy, its immoral. As a society we must stop all this political correct nonsense. They committed god knows what crimes to get locked up in the first place. As far as I am aware the drugs these people took are, and always have been illegal. What about the people who their offences were committed against. What about their rights. How much compensation have these waste of spaces paid them I wonder.
If you elect through your own free will to attack society you loose your so called rights whilst atoning for you sins. If they do not want to do the time don't do the crime simple as that

I think this is crazy and ridiculous and outrageous!

How DARE the British Government PAY criminals OUR money - which we have worked hard to earn and paid in taxes - to good for nothing, lowlife, petty criminals.

Does this mean that the prison authorities can now be arrested for possession with intent to supply class A drugs.

If I was self employed, I would STOP paying my taxes as a protest. I wonder if the powers that be will start supplying EVERYONE with the one thing that they crave? Free chocolate? Free booze? Free fags? Free designer shoes - after all, why should we be deprived of those little things that we WANT to have every day - are they not torturing us too? As well as torturing us by using our hard earned money to pander to these pathetic excuses for humanity.

I agree, it's ridiculous. I'm a smoker should I sue for being deprived of having a cigarette in public places when the ban comes in? It's going to open all sorts of floodgates now. Why should someone who has done wrong be given compensation for something illegal? Prisions are luxorious now a days. They seem to have more rights than those who don't break the law.

Why is this happening?
Who is making the most money from these cases?
The people who defend the convicted criminals. Their LAWYERS, who are using fully the European Bill Of Human Rights, to win compensation for these criminals.
Our Government should exempt from the Bill people imprisoned for crimes committed, and ensure the criminal pays compensation.

It is crazy. But no more crazy than a muslim insisting on wearing full headcover whilst teaching at an Anglican school! How much tax payers money went to that cause?

I do know they are using acupuncture in correctional facilities in the USA. It is part of the detox programms they offer and from what i have come accross the success rates are very high.
i did try Googling (usually i come accros this reading up on chinese medicine) but didn't have much joy.
In the UK there is no detox in prisons. Unless you want to go into a drug-free wing and that means going cold turkey. There is no need for that since it stresses out more than just the inmate coming off the drugs. I.e, the medical staff and screws too.
But i did find this:

For all the rubbish that the Uk has taken on board fom the USA i really can't see why the BMA should be able to momopolize acupuncture any longer. There are many well-qualified acupuncturists in the uk but they can't practice on the NHS because they are not qualified as GP's. It's a sad story of institutional narrow-mindedness.

"Although acupuncture has been practiced in China for more than 3,000 years, its roughly 20-year history in the United States has usually been greeted with skepticism by the medical profession. However, its success with drug addiction programs has begun to overshadow some doubts."

"Acupuncturist Carol Francois works for Bayview, as well as San Francisco's County Jail No. 7. Francois works through a federally funded program called Sisters In Sober Treatment Empowered In Recovery (SISTER). The program is a demonstration project with an average of 61 women inmates, said Francois."

"Acupuncture is administered to the inmates every morning. "It's an incredible way to start the day. It really sets a very positive tone," said Sunny Schwartz, program director for the San Francisco County jails. Schwartz first heard about acupuncture through other correctional programs. "I saw a demonstration and a tape on acupuncture currently being used in Dade County [Florida]."

"Santa Clara and other California counties have several drug programs which incorporate acupuncture. Other states such as Florida, Oregon, Maryland, and Texas are offering acupuncture detox treatments to drug-addicted inmates.
In California, first-time drug offenders may have their cases dismissed after successfully completing a minimum 18-month "diversion" program, according to the Berkeley District Attorney's Office. Diversion programs are set-up and overseen by the probation departments."

"Although the use of acupuncture with drug addiction programs is fairly new, it has been part of some detox services for more than 20 years in New York City.
The Drug Abuse Division at New York City's Lincoln Hospital is the model acupuncture detox program in the country."

"We saw the withdrawal symptoms stop, and patients choosing acupuncture over other treatments -- that doesn't happen very often with drug abusers," said Smith."

"The hospital uses acupuncture to taper down the methadone in the addict's system. ~The basic value of acupuncture was helping the person to become more calm and centered, so they could participate in treatment," said Smith. "Acupuncture is a nonverbal body language. This is extremely important in dealing with addicts. A lot of people think addiction is a moral problem, and looking at the non-physical part of the addiction is threatening. Society avoids addicts. They want to put them in jail, not look at the possibility of curing them," he said."

"Smith never tells people that acupuncture cures drug addiction. "Acupuncture is a foundation for psycho-social recovery. Like cement used for the foundation of a house, the foundation itself doesn't amount to a whole lot. Acupuncture by itself in addition doesn't have very much value, unless it is combined with some kind of psycho-social system," said Smith.

i completely agree with you, I really dont understand how they won - the fact that they are in prison means that they have probably disregarded someone elses human rights. They should be pleased that they have the chance to get off drugs as it not only harms ruins their immediate future, it also makes a mess of their body in the long run!

As far as im concerned they gave up their rights as a citizen when they committed a crime serious enough to be sent to prison.

Taxpayers should be protesting strongly against this action and the government should pass laws straight away to change the rules.

European laws have a lot to answer for. Its sickening.

Just another sign of the rapid moral decay in this country.
The judges are perverted and as a result the criminal element in society hold the courts and the entire system in contempt.

It's absolute madness, all this political correctness, human rights nonsense, it'll all come round full circle because people are sick to the back teeth with it. When common sense is allowed to be used again and people stand up to these idiots then things might just change!
