I use the free = Avast = 4 Home Edition - Free antivirus software - free virus protection for home PC: - full-featured antivirus package designed for home usage.(FREE) = http://www.avast.com and really like it as it has always kept me safe from virus, worms, trojans, etc., but don't use Norton anti-virus.
The most important thing to keep in mind, regardless of which anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-spyware and firewall you use ( http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/default.mspx ) is to keep it UPDATED, just as it is important to make sure you have all windows critical and security updates. + =

I was cleaning up a friend laptop and she had Norton but it was no longer updating and yes their was a huge conflict when I downloaded Avast. I unistalled Norton and the rotten thing released all its stored viruses but Avast then hovered them all up. Sorry no link but a Google should find it.

avast anti-virus and other avast security is good solid ,all round protection, very trustworthy, well in a word,,,brilliant
with regards to conflicts with norton..you should never use 2 anti-virus programs, and the same is applied to firewalls, however you may use numerous anti-spyware programs as each have different ways they detect spyware
so i would uninstall any norton software before you install avast anti-virus
you will find the free avast 4.7 anti-virus at http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
good luck

I really like Avast, but not Norton. It slows down your computer and it's not even good... Why don't you use Avast as an antivirus too?

The link is avast.com. I've had it for about 3 years and love it. It's free and although it IS slow in searching the computer, it's worth it.
For a system scan, I let it run all night... so there's no issue for slowing down my system.
It probably WOULD conflict with Norton. I had McAfee beforehand and uninstalled it (multiple virus scanners doesn't typically work)
good luck

do not run 2 anti virus programs together, they conflict and will not run properly, AVG are not stopping the free edition at all you will just need to upgrade to 7.5 free edition before january
