A nice guy I know (relative) is in jail because of being with the wrong people at the wrong time, and he didn't have the $$$ to pay restitution (sp) so he just got put into jail.

I love to write letters and send cards to people. I figure since I do not have the money to help him that way, I can send words of encouragement to him. He's a good kid who made a wrong decision and got caught. He's been trying to get his life back in order, getting a full time job. I was wondering if you'd think he'd appreciate the gesture of someone writing to him? If you were in jail in the past, how did you feel when you got letters?

I have a cousin who has been locked up for 12 years under the same circumstances, and I write him at least once a week and I visit him once a month. To let you in on a few things when a person is locked up they only have time on their hands, the only connection they have to the outside world is thru letters and visitations and if their behavior is good some are allowed a 3 minute phone call every so often. Any words of encouragement that you are willing to take the time out and write to send to him will be appreciated more than you will ever know. At least you will be letting him know that he has not been forgotten. Most prisioners are written off by their families when they are locked up and once they do their time and get out they are repeat offenders. You can't change the fact that he is locked up because what's done is done but you can sure help each day seem a little brighter with words of encouragement and just letting him know you care.

well yes they love to get letters.. if you were sitting somewhere with no one but weirdos around you wouldn't you like to have someone to talk to that you knew cared about you.. He most likely knows that no one has the money to get him out so i guess having someone write to you is the second best that they can ask for.
but get with it.. by the time you ask everyones opinion he will be back out again.. and you won't get the chance to show you care.
have a good day. it will improve his out look.. remember don't tell him how stupid he is , he already knows this as he is sitting behind bars..

I think he would appreciate your concern and your kind words of encouragement. My brother is in prison and along with writing him I would write his roomate too. They both appreciated it. It gets lonely in there and it is encouraging to know you have people out there that care about you. Just to let you know, I ended up marrying my brothers roomate and we are very, very happy.

writting letters will boost his spirits and as he has not much to do, he will look forward to getting them.
