I remember this actor's face but not his name. He almost always played villians. He played rolls like bounty hunters, saddle tramps or stage robbers. He had black hair dark eyes and a pock marked complexion. He was very thin and had kind of a wolf-like appearance. He was a very good actor but I haven't seen him in years. Always played kind of a whiney voiced hillbilly type.

All I can think of is Bert Freed who played Clovis on Gunsmoke.
He is now deceased.
Maybe you are thinking of Ken Curtis who played "Festus"?

I bet you are thinking of Jack Elam. He always played a baddie in westerns and he looked the part. He was a terrific actor. He died a few years back
