formula is man made and should only be used as a last resort when the mother is unable to breastfeed
if you mix formula with your breast milk; first of all you are trusting the drug company that made the formula to do as good as or better job than nature; second your body makes the amount of milk your child needs. if you supplement with formula, your breast will produce less milk; eventually, you may stop producing milk if there is not enough suckle going on.
if your health is good and your nutrition also, you should breast feed exclusively for the first four months; not even water
then add water to your child's diet and fruits etc, it should never be necessary to use formula unless you are unable to breast feed

Exclusive breastfeeding is definitely better than mixing with formula - the only reason to give formula is when the baby is 'failing to thrive', which means they arent gaining weight properly. Before you give formula, you should see a lactation consultant, a midwife, a pediatrician, a close friend who has breastfed their child, someone who can help you improve your breastfeeding technique (such as proper latch-on, frequency, time spent on each breast, pumping inbetween/during feeds, etc) before introducing formula. Even one bottle of formula a day is enough to change the natural pH balance of your baby's tummy, which breastmilk does not do as it is the only thing babies should be eating.
As for one woman's breastmilk being more nutritious than another, I've never heard that. The hindmilk is the most important for proper weight gain, which comes at the end of the feed so that can be one reason why some babies dont gain enough - they arent getting the higher calorie milk that comes last.
To 'play it safe', you should regularly weigh your newborn at periodic 'well baby' check-ups with your pediatrician, and NOT give formula.

Assuming you're eating right (nutrients passed on through breast milk come from diet) and not partaking of things such as smoking or drinking which could harm the baby (I doubt it since you care enough to check up on a matter like this), breast milk is far better for your maby than formula. Plus, during the first few weeks after birth, breast milk contains important antibodies for baby. Formula really is just for if you're having trouble breastfeeding, such as if you'll be away from your baby, if you aren't producing enough milk/have trouble releasing it, or if you have a medication or condition which makes breastfeeding a bad idea (HIV can be spread through breast milk, antidepressants could harm the baby, etc.).

I take it you're a first time mom. As long as you are eating a nutritious diet yourself, you don't have to mix breast milk with anything. I used to express extra breast milk and put in bottles and freeze it for when I wasn't around. I breast fed one son for 8 months and the other for 18 months. Neither of them required any other sustenance the entire time. Listen to your doctor. If the doctor things your baby needs a supplement to your breast milk he or she will let you know.

If the baby seems content, don't worry. Just because his sister has a problem, doesn't mean you will. Relax and enjoy your baby.

Pure breast milk is the best for your baby. I had a wonderful doctor during my pregnancy that encouraged me to breastfeed and I did. However my son's pediatrician gave me a lot of grief for breastfeeding my son...I just kept plugging away because I knew breast milk was best! :-)

Hang in there!

As long as your eating well, not taking harmful medications, drinking, doing drugs....breast milk alone is the best thing for your baby, why ruin it with mixing it with formula ???

Bf'ing is best. No need to use formula if you don't want to. Don't listen to most of the unwanted advice people give you, they may mean well, but a lot of the times they aren't correct. Do your own research and use your instincts.

Exclusive breastfeeding is best. Even a severely malnourished mother can breastfeed her child. If you live in the USA, odds are good that your nutrition is far better than that. :-) Your milk is PERFECT for your baby. It changes from day to day and hour to hour to meet your child's needs.

Nothing is equal to breast feed and there is no need of it. If you want you can give separately
