Linksys has some very nice tutorials for hooking up routers, even if you do not have a Linksys router. Check out their Learning Center.

If you are networking PC's, then yes you will need a router. What type depends on wether you want to go wireless or not. If you do, you can buy a wireless router from any good electronics/computer store and also a receiver for the other computer.

If you want wired, you will need a normal router and a cable to connect the 2 PC's. From memory I can't think of the cable you need, but the guys at your local PC store can definately help out :-)

use telnet to access the router in other machine.
in Cmd prompt, type telnet ipaddress(ethernet). In router set telnet password and priviledged password.
