I went to Berlin last year with my (now ex)boyfriend,& stayed with his friends. We went out for a drink, and as they didn't speak English I couldn't make myself understood as to who was minding their 6 year old son.Later on in the evening i managed to ask my boyfriend who was minding the child,& he said no-one.I wanted to go back straight away as I thought 6 years old is way to young to be left alone(I have 2 children myself,a few years older,& I still don't leave them on their own)I was told to stop making a fuss as the child has been getting left on his own since he was 2 years old.I was getting quite upset by now,& was told to stop making a scene as it was legal in Germany to leave a child on their own once they are able to use a telephone. They have since had another child who is now nearly one year old,& I have heard that they are coming to England for a 2 week visit,I am worried they will be left alone in a strange country(child only speaks Turkish&German)

It s not legal at all. You can get arrested for neglect if the authorities would know. But since no one said something, they wouldnt know.
I m not sure what went on in the head of the parents, but under no circumstances is this legal. There would have to be a babysitter, neighbor, whoever in the same apartment then the child.
You can leave your child for a few hours when he/she is like 10 years old but not a 2 year old. NO WAY!
When they come to visit in England, of course the English laws will apply. And im sure that England has a similar if not even the same law. So if anyone finds out, he/she will surely call the police.

You should politely inform them about the laws in Britain. They need to know these things. A couple of years ago there was a big fuss in New York about a Danish couple who left their child in a stroller on the sidewalk while they sat in an indoor cafe. They got a big fine, and they were extremely upset about it.

Should it surprise anyone?
Anyone who does this obviously does not give a damn about their children....

It's too bad the laws are not on the side of the child in some countries.....

It's not legal in Germany, but since when has something not being legal stopped anyone from doing it?
