One of the most important steps in postharvest treatment of cut flowers is to recut the flower stems at an angle under warm (100-110 F) water and place them in a plastic container filled with a floral preservative solution of the same temperature. The floral preservative solutions can either double or triple the shelf life of your roses.

If you don't have any floral preservative available...I was told by several commercial rose growers to use a mixture of;

One can of 7-Up (or similar soft drink) + equal part water & one drop of bleach. Lemonade can be substituted- providing it doesn't contain any pulp.

7-Up contains both citric acid and sugar.... which helps keep your roses intact and delays breakdown. The bleach is used to prevent algae/scum from forming in your vase...which will plug up the vascular tissues and prevent water from translocating up to your flowers. Make sure you change the water solution every two or 3 days. It's advisable to keep your roses in a cool place and away from any fruit or vegetables that emit ethylene.

There are two things that you can do that will keep your Rose alive longer. Change the water daily and recut the stems after a few days under cool water. This usually helps keep them going. Also the cooler the room in which they are kept the longer they will survive. Good Luck!

Be sure to change all of the water each day; before you put the flowers back into the water, cut a small bit off the bottom of the stem so that the tissue is better able to take up water. Keep the vase with the flowers in as cool a place as possible; if you have space in your refrigerator, put them in at night.

there is a sachet of a concoction ( which the name evades me for the minute ) that florists use to help their flowers live longer . but otherwise i can only suggest a change of water every couple of days ( putting them in the fridge is OK , but you can't smell or see them much , but having said that , if you want them for an occasion a little down the track ; then sure , go that way . good luck .

There's a kind of plant food that florists usually give with bouquets that helps with that, if you didn't get any, go to any floral retailer and I'm sure they'd be glad to give you some.

I always add a cube of sugar and a bit of apple vinegar to the water, and cut the stems often and they last for a couple of weeks at least.

every day or two cut a small portion of the stem off, and add fresh water, that keeps them beautiful alot longer.
