Being cold blooded, tortoises and turtles receive their heat from another source, and in the winter many of these sources shrink. Therefore many species of turtle and smaller size tortoises are capable of a hibernation state, they burrow a hole in the ground below the frost line and will remain dormant for several months until the weather breaks. In this dormant state their metabolism slows down. This will not happen with very warm weather as their is no need due to plentiful food supply. It also depends on the species and the physical shape [health] the animal is currently in.

In one study, a HEALTHY tortoise was able to go 6 months on the equivilant of 1/2 of a banana and access to unlimited clean water.

Tortoises are extinct on some islands because whaling fleets and such used to capture them and keep them in the ship's holds with no food as a way to ensure fresh meat over time. Sadly, the healthy giant tortoises caught would often live for months in these conditions.

If you have an ill tortoise that is not eating, it will generally not last more than a few weeks.

If your tortise is not eating, you really should be working on figuring out why.
