Well, you would have to be gothic to anwer that question, and I am gothic. First of all, almost all of these people are wrong. Gothic people do not listen to emo. Emo people listen to emo. And just because a person is Gothic, it doesnt mean that they like to "slit their wrists". Gothic people listen to whatever genre of music that they want to. Not all people listen to metal just because they are gothic. I like a little punk, a lot of rock, hard rock, and metal. Maybe some people try to "insult" most gothic people because they do not understand the sterotype. Gothic people are devoted to their music, and in my case music is my life. Being gothic is just a strong form of being individual.

Goth - (Death/Hardcore/Thrash)Metal - Cradle of Filth, Soulfly, Moonspell, "old" Trivium.... etc
Emo - Emo - AFI, Fallout boy, Bullet for my Valentine, My Chemical Romance.... etc
Indie - Rock, Indie - Muse, The Arcade Fire, Six Feet Under, NickleBack.... etc

Usually mostly emo and punk. Crappy versions of rock. You have to really love music to understand and respect rock/metal. They also listen to a lot of new age music.
