Many states have the death penalty. The problem is the sentences aren't carried out enough.

And, what? You'll be the arbitrater of what was 'provoked' and what was not? As a Pagan-Jew I can always jump on the 'eye for an eye' bandwagon but having lived several centuries on this rock I am aware that the death penalty DOES not prevent murders from happening. And too often the death penalty is used as a political tool. Were you or anyone aware that less than fifty years ago a man could be executed for rape and that in several Southern states rape was defined as ANY sexual act between a black male and a 'white' female. And were you aware there was at least one black male who was brought to court on charges filed by the white parents of a woman who truly loved him,and that he was eventually judged guilty and executed?
Peace..

How many murderers have been let off on technicalities when they were supposed to have been hanged? How many innocent people have been put into prisons/ hanged / electrocuted because someone framed them?
If you are talking about murderers who kill out of sheer pleasure
( psychopaths ) then - yes of course the death penalty should apply. Child abuse and killings come under the same category The judges have to take into account the reason for the murder and degree of provocation, if any.
As for the lady who has written about 'uncivilised' countires having capital punishment - let me ask her - is it civilised to take drugs, abuse your parents , and lose your viginity at the age of 15 or so????

For murders where there is absolutely "no doubt" I would like to see Capital Punishment reintroduced.
There should be a limited amount of time for appeal, not like the US where appeals can continue for decades.
We are far too soft in this country, look at the compensation we are going to pay the imprisoned drug users. Apparently their "Human Rights" have been violated because the authorities withdrew their drug substitute too soon.
What a load of crap.
What about the people they have burgled or mugged to pay for their habit. Do they get compensated? not on your life.
The country is going mad!!

I am a advocate of the death penalty, I also think that it should be in public view so that all of the other would be criminals have a deterrent, I know that it sounds barbaric, but if it deters nut cases wouldn't it be worth it to protect the Innocent, as long as you can prove that they are guilty, and now we have allot of different ways to do that accurately.
To all of the people that believe the answer is just to build more prisons, who do you think will have to pay for these country clubs, the criminals? And if they are not going to be put to sleep, why don't we make the prison system self sustaining, and stop giving the free loaders a free ride, make them work for their food for a change, don't we have too?

Yes it should be brought back and as for someone saying 'Ask Timothy Evans, oh you can't because he was innocent and hanged'...that's an out of date argument now especially due to DNA. I can't remember the names of every innocent man woman and child who has been murdered and if I could they would be too many to list.....get real murderers are evil bastards who deserve to die...end of story.

If there is a continuing rise in unprovoked murders, then there is a problem in society, not the justice system, and that is what needs to be addressed.

I think if we do bring back capital punishment we have to do it differently we have seen it does not work in america as people are killed wrongly or just kept on death row for years.
You cant lock somebody up for 30 years when they know they will be killed and expect them to want to behave in prison and do anything to better their lives.
If you are going to commit people to death then you have to be fair, kill them immediatly or never.

YES. Actually invoke the 'three strikes and you're out' concept. After 3 felonies, simply take them out back and shoot them. No appeals after the third felony. It is obvious that they cannot learn the lessons and society needs to be rid of them and not have to continue to pay for their maintenance and upkeep.

Of course!!
They just now have the life of Reilly, free: food, T.V. gym, no taxes like our poor Senior Citizens.
If they are to remain in prison then they should be put to use, i.e. HARD LABOUR, not like soft "new labour".
They might get early release, and do it again!!!!!!!!!!
When does life mean life? NEVER....
