Because our ingenuity in engineering has been consistently demolished by successive british governments and the cheapness of far eastern and cheap eastern european foreign industry and labour. UK businesses are taxed beyond belief along with the working population. The influx of asylum seekers and eastern european nationals have also put a massive pressure on the UK infrastructure so that world leading public services (National Health Service, Welfare State etc) are now reaching a state of complete collapse. ( I am a civil servant and know the state of the public service) We have a limp Prime Minister happy to be Monkey Boy Bush's puppet and take our countries into an illegal war. (funny how worse things have happened in countries without oil reserves where we have not intervened?!) We are also to scared to speak out against beaureaucratic European Legislation that emasculates british industry as, once again, we have a weak prime minister and unfortunately the opposition leader is all talk and no substance. The official name of our our country is 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and the Islands' We are no longer 'United' or 'Great'. I am proud to be British or more accurately, of what Britain has achieved in the past (except for slaveryetc obviously)but am now embarrassed by our decline into subservience to the Bush, the EU and political correctness.
And the weathers always s**t!!!
But at least I'm not French ;
(or am I????)
What is British? We are a mix of Scandinavian (viking), Saxon, Norman, Celt etc. Even Mrs Thatcher has middle eastern ancestry!!! I have German and Irish ancestry. I'm still British (until I move to Spain and change my name to Juan!!!)

Why do you think Britain is not respected? Because a stereotype about them is their bad teeth. You should see what they say about Americans over there! It's all in fun.

Also, all white Americans are NOT descendants of the British. In fact, the largest European ethnic block in the US is German not British.

the Brits are very well respected aside from the comic stereotypes. Have you forgotten for basically 200 years up to WWII, the British Empire spanned the globe? India, the Middle East, parts of Asia and Africa, etc., all were colonized by the Brits? Definitely respect the Brits.

Why would you include the Irish in that list? Just because they were enslaved by England for half a millinia does not guarantee a common culture.

And you seem to have ignored all of the Germans, Spanish, French, Dutch, Swedes, Poles, Italians and Russians (to name a few) in the collective ancestry of "white Americans".

Did it ever occur to you that all those "white American Irish, Scottish and Welsh" people went to America to get away from the British?

The half the world they once colonized only respected their force. After losing that in the aftermath of the first world war they are just a nation of tiara-worshiping twits, mere shadows of their former glory.

Since they have a penchant for poorly run government programs -- like the National Health Service and its Dental component -- few British will attend to the needs of oral hygine in the private sector. Since the NHS doesn't handle prevention very well, you get a nation of bad teeth.

You got the 'World is goin' to h*** in a hand basket' blues. The thing is; people don't have any respect for authority especially and history in general. Americans are suffering the same anti-everything right syndrome. Even half the Americans believe it. If you take criticism personally, you'll not succeed at anything. Just grin and bear it, but keep on the path of doing what you know is right and let history or God straighten out the details. Although even history is being revisited these days. Check out this site for the real story on the Crusades, for example. http://www.catholicculture.org/docs/doc_view.cfm?recnum=4461
This is my way of righting misinformation.

" All white Americans and Australians are decendants or irish, english, scottish or welsh "

That is a certainly one of the more ignorant statements I've seen on here. A large percentage of the US Caucasian population are descendants of Italy, France, Poland, Holland, Russia, Greece, and, like myself, Germany.

I respect Britain, especially it's literature. But I'm an anachronism, as, I'm afraid, Britain is considered in general. The modern world has little use for history, and it seems it is respected only as much as it can be used for purposes now. I respect Britain, in part, because it honors and incorporates its history. But even many of the Brits would like to leave the past behind, as though it is stunting their growth. One example is Prince Charles's debate with many in the public as to whether architecture should continue in traditional styles (as Prince Charles would have it), or whether they should make a complete break with it to make Britain modern, hence we have the 'egg'--London's City Hall. A great example too of the mix is the Barbican--a series of highrise apartments with fragments of Roman walls in its center, and a centuries old church. Yet, looking at the list of the ten ugliest buildings in London, they are all modern.

Colonisation is not a matter to be respected for.. if you meant to say why the world isn't awed by Britain anymore, I think that it's because in the latter part of the 20th c. the most known "Brittish" product was its soccer teams, hardly a subject to be revered about either especially when given the fact that a whole proud country became dependent on some stern yet narcissistic swed to teach them how to play it in order to compete in the international arena ... just too many let downs if you ask me

Australia isn't like that anymore, i of course live there and find that there are more nationalities like asians than brits. Also there are many half casts.......besides every nationality is mocked. Even people who have irish, british and scottish background consider themselves aussie cause they were born here.......you've got to remember that they came here like 400 yrs ago and they weren't so nice to to the natives either

i think a large amount of people do respect Britain as a whole but generally i think any lack of respect for Britain by its previous colonies comes from the fact that its been many years since we ruled them, like a rebellious teenager who has become independent they want to be different by rebelling from there parents (Britain) just because they can.

by the way what has America of Australia done recently to be proud of, and britain should be well know for its banks as well of football teams

I wouldn't say I disrespect Britain but episodes in their history make it hard to respect them - like the stuff up at Gallipoli and general disregard for our lives in WWI, attempted genocide during 19th C, slave trading. You have an amazing history but the countries you colonized often felt the harsh end of it. I don't think anyone disrespects Britain, they just don't necessarily have any respect for them.
