stop and heed ye passers by
As you are now, so once was I
As I am now so you will be
So be prepared to follow me

Up above the village of Haworth, in Yorkshire, there is a stone marking the grave of a young girl who went up in a hot air balloon and then fell to her death. Complete with an engraving of a hot air balloon. Not funny, but certainly an oddity.

Not 'funny', per se, but rather disturbing. It's on a headstone in our local cemetary (which, I might add, is one of the most incredible bits of land I've ever seen--absolutely stellar place, especially in the fall). It reads as follows:
"Don't weep for me,
My Children dear.
I am not dead,
But resting here..."
..at this point, I thought 'Okay, that's nice; reassuring for her children, etc". Then it continues...
"As I am now
You soon shall be.
So prepare for Death
And follow me."
Yeah. That's right. 'Prepare for Death, and follow me'
Blew my f****n mind.
So that's my favourite part of the cemetary. Always fun to show that to someone who has never seen it (it's quite an expansive cemetary, so it's easy to overlook such things). Cheers.

I've heard of bells on the top of headstones connected by a chain down to the coffin so the deader can ring the bell if hes been accidently buried alive

To digg the dust enclosed here!
Blest be ye man that spares thes stones
And curst be he that moues my bones.

Here lies a poor woman who always was tired,
For she lived in a place where help wasn't hired.
Her last words on earth were, dear friends I am going
Where washing ain't done nor sweeping nor sewing,
And everything there is exact to my wishes,
For there they don't eat and there's no washing of dishes.
Don't mourn for me now, don't mourn for me never'
For I'm going to do nothing for ever and ever.
(Seen on a grave in Hertfordshire.)
