A friend of mine gave a bum some money watched him for a little while then watched him climb into a brand new pick up truck and drive away. Not saying everyone is like that but I bet more than you think are.

I make a habit not to give to people with signs begging on the side of the road, mainly due to safety reasons. Also, when I see the same person, day after day, at the same location begging, I know that they are not trying to help themselves so help from me is out of the question. There are plenty of jobs out there if a person in willing to work. & if they are disabled, then there are routes they can take to get assistance. I, however, don't think they are less than people.

i usually give some $$ if i have some to spare. most of the time i don't have any money though. before i became disabled, i would buy a small bag of groceries...fruit, lunch meat, bread, etc. and give that out. there are so many homeless ppl in our town. it's very sad to me. i know some ppl choose to be "vagabonds," but some are just downright scammers, some are addicts, many seem to be runaway kids. now that it's winter, my friends and i have been giving coats and blankets rather than money.
get this: last week a guy talking on a cell phone asked me for some spare change...he had a better cell phone than mine! i asked him what his deal was, and he said he had to have the phone to check in with his parole officer. lmao.

Depends on the bum. Aggressive bums? Nope. Bums with dumb stories? Nope. Bums who are honest? Sure, if I have some change on me. So, "Give me money, you rich prick" is met with "I carry a gun and will shoot you in your face"; "My car ran out of gas" is met with, "OK, let me go buy you some gas, wait here." They always balk; "Got any change. I want to get high," is met with, "I only have a buck in quarters. Take it. Use it. Good luck."

When I was sixteen my daddy and I were standing outside the church. A guy can walking towards us from the direction of our towns bus station. He came up to my daddy and told him that he was trying to get home and needed money for a bus ticket. daddy asked him what it would cost, the guy told him, daddy gave him the money the guy thanked him and walked away in the opposite direction of the bus station.I was shocked because I felt like the guy had taken daddy's money and conned him in the process. I told daddy what I thought, I will never forget what he said to me"Baby, the minute I gave that man the money it became his to do with as he sees fit. Don't forget that when you help someone you do it from the heart without question. You can choose either to help or not, but once you decide to help it's not your money anymore." I learned alot that day and I have always remembered it. I don't help everyone all the time, but I seldom turn down a reasonable request from someone who approaches me and asks for help.

I have to admit, I am a little scared by them. Maybe I have seen too many popular culture depictions. I do consider them to be people, of course.
