Check it out.... there is a book called "Sudoku for Dummies"... it shows you some techniques to use in solving a sudoku puzzle...

one quick tip... with a pencil write the number that could be in some of the squares in upper corners as you work on a puzzle, this helps to eliminate spaces as you work on the puzzle...

Also, start with easy ones for a while until you get the idea on using the above technique as well as the others in the book...

Have Fun...

There are really no "short cut" methods for solving sudoku; but the site below is pretty comprehensive and will give you some solving techniques.

A good place to go and play is at the second site below; billions of games in 4 levels of difficulty.

It seems to go a little quicker for me if I look at each 9 character box in a horizontal or vertical line and start looking for 1's. I identify which box(es) don't have them and which do and those boxes that have 1's will rule out a row/column in the box that doesn't have 1's. Hopefully by looking at the row/column at a right angle to the available row/column I can eliminate boxes until only one is left in the square box. Then I do the same for 2's, 3's, etc... It's definitely hard to explain Sudoku strategy in words though.

initiate both with the squares or the lines (horizontal or vertical) and fill the finest ones first...those that slot in because of the given numbers! they could flow no position else! From there on it turns right into a interest of chess! it would want to help in case you practice with the straightforward puzzles...flow on to center ranges and then the hardest (which could require a pencil and an eraser, lol).

I thought the whole purpose was to think things out. If all you want to do is fill in the squares just look at the answer. My newspaper prints it below the puzzle upside down.

It is just using the concept of numbering straight up and down or sideways,if you practice slowly you will be understanding the essence in it.
