Hey I'm sure you can chat when you've got things in common with people. It's just finding out what you have in common that's the hard part. I feel the same way often.
I've overcome it by watching popular TV shows and watching the news, then thinking of amusing and topical things to add.

Start with the easy stuff. Where are you from? What do you do? These are great easy questions that open the door to a lot of different conversation, and can give you some quick insight on common interests. Tattoo's are anther easy topic, there is always a story there, and most people don't mind telling you.

The best thing to say is what ever is on ur mind at that time or compliment the person that always brakes the ice.Say something like: I like your shoes or bag or jacket, you got great taste where'd you get it from. A general compliment will always brake the ice.Saying whats on your mind is secondary to one word answers. Remember we only talk to people we are interested in and vice versa(unless it's work or something neccesary). So you already have an advantage.

Are you a bore bore or are you bored with yourself?
If you are bored with yourself then what you need to do is learn something interesting or important. If you find you are bored with motor mouths then that is something else, very hard to overcome.
I, myself, only talk if I have something important to say but then I'm happy with my own thoughts and company.
If you absolutely must yakkety yak then ask a question about the other person. I find that people like to talk about themselves, expecially the extroverts.

I never know what to say to people and I used to get really anxious and nervous when around new people. Then I realized that the anxity would quickly diminish if I said ANYTHING socially acceptable.
My big personal discovery? People love to talk about themselves. Find a way to get them to do this and the conversation will flow. This is especially true if they percieve that you really are interested.

Just try to ask questions that cannot be answered with a yes or no. Once you get started, the questions will come.

How about a better idea...I am the same way. I have cut the general population out of my life. I hate talking to them because they embarass themselves trying to sound smart. I have become particular and only allow a select few to experience my presence.
