A Lord is either a life or hereditary peer. A knighthood is usually for life only and confers the title 'Sir'. I believe baronets are also addressed as 'Sir' but is hereditary.

Both are conferred by the monarch on the recommendation of the Prime Minister, most often in the context of the New Year Honours List. (Do a google for that in early January for the latest load.)

These titles are frequently conferred on state hirelings for treason to their country, to paraphrase Johnson.

British subjects with knighthoods are not addressed as "Lord ____;" they are addressed as "Sir ____."

If being addressed as "Lord" is your goal and you're a British subject, my advice is to do something incredibly meritorious and obtain a Life Peerage. Even a baronetcy will do. Along with your new non-commoner status will come the dubious privilege of being addressed as "My Lord."
