in reference to your first question, much of Russia's growth from nation to empire took place during the reign of Peter "the Great" who instituted a policy of "westernization" which "dragged Russia kicking and screaming" into the modern world and elevated the country to the rank of a first class world power. Among his accomplishments were the creation of the first Russian navy, the creation of a new coastal capital (St. Petersburg), and the expansion of the phsyical empire to both the North (re-claiming land held by Sweden, then a world class power)and the South (against the Ottoman Turks). Unfortunately, Peter died in 1725, and a succession of less adept monarchs (with a few exceptions, i.e. Catherine) and Russia declined politically, to the point of revolution in 1917. As previously referenced below, much of the deterioration of Russia politically and economically was brought about by its reluctant entry into WWI and the loss of confidence in Tsar Nicholas II as leader and "father" of the people...Rasputin didn't help. To answer your final question, Stalin's leadership was harsh to say the least. He was extremely paranoid, and this motivated him to form a secret society with which he could indentify and "eliminate" potential and imagined threats to his authority. Many of the Russian people, however, worshipped him as the head of a so-called "cult of personality," despite the fact that he was so ruthless...and crazy.

First of all you need to read the WW1 history so you can get the whole picture of Russia before the bolsheviks, and that should tell you about the treachery that led to the demise of the Tzars. www.wikipedia.com or www.history.com
Socialism, Marxism, Communism and the combination of all. Working to overthrow the existing government. Which all lead to Stalin the maniac, he was insane with power. Read about our General Patton and that will give you a truer picture of Stalin from another military man's eye and experience first hand. Russia had a very cultivated civilized country in the old world with Russian Orthodox as a religion and Judaism, Christianity, and some Muslim. After Stalin in Leningrad and the defeat of Hitler's army research that as well and how he was torturing people, both his own and Germans.

The Tsar was an absolute monarch. When the jerk asks one of his nonsensical questions, answer politely and tell him that you are truly surprised that he didn;t do his homework on this question. Smile as you plunge the knife in.
