The white marble.... CaCo3 is a substance very much vunerable to chemical reactions. esp. acids. the pollutants that are released are acidic in nature. even the mathur's oil refinery produces pollutants like oxides of sulphur. Whether it be co2, co or so2 when then mix with water.... rain water cause acid rains too. all there pollutants react on the marble and thus decoloring it.

All buildings darken over time, some comes from dirt and smoke in the air, others are caused by weathering. If you turn over a rock that has been untouched for hundreds of years, the underside will be lighter as it is not exposed to the elements. Now we have a new problem and that is the effect of pollution. Because of the winds, there is little acid rain in the area of Taj Mahal but the air also carries dust from volcanoes, sands carrying iron ores and other darkening substances. In countries where acid rain is more common, there is erosion of the marble and in Rome, Venice and London, workers are applying epoxy resins to protect statues and buildings. However another threat to the Taj Mahal is greater than darkening...instability. The structure is old and has become more and more unstable. The government now forbids flights over the building to reduce vibrations, but now great effort has been made to make it sturdy again.

don't worry - the government has already ordered a huge quantity of Fair & Lovely !
Had Shahjahan known that an oil refinery would be set up nearby (Mathura) and there would be a whole lot of atmospheric pollution to deal with, he would have told his architect to use granite or slate (instead of white marble) for making Taj Mahal ...

because of the acid rain. sulphur dioxide in the industrial smoke when mixes with rain water or atmospheric water, forms sulphuric acid, which will react with marble, chemically calcium carbonate, producing co2 and salts, leaving dark spots and crumbling of marble pieces.

1) is that due to the acid rain that is in past
2) and due to sudden large increase in the containt of carbondioxide it is darkening
