I wouldn't even like to guess. If I can't sleep one night I'll try and count them for you, but I imagine it runs well into six figures, possibly seven. The way full-page adverts take over most newspapers these days makes an accurate number almost impossible to guess at.

My copy of Sunday's News of the World for example has 80 pages (not including the supplements). There is a big picture of the free James Bond 007 DVD on the cover, but even allowing for that, there is probably 100 words on the front page. There are a lot more words and stories on page 2 - 2000 plus, but page three is full mostly of pictures of Kylie and probably only has 250 words on it. If I assume 2500 words a page as an average and times by 80 pages then I get 200,000 words. To be honest, I think even that figure is far too low - I'd say you could safely double that number at least and still have words to spare.

As for a broadsheet, you'd probably be doubling that number again, as they have far less pictures and adverts. 1,000,000 plus.

A recent study by students at Cambridge found that though there will be varying amounts of words in different newspapers; due to supplements, size of print etc. that there is on average only about 600 different words used in each publication. Not a lot really when you consider how thick a dictionary is.

If you calculate that an average article will have, say 1-2,000 words (obviously, some are smaller and some are larger) you should be able to make a guess as to how many are on the page, times how many pages there are.
