Because in those times men were gentlemen toward women. And A**holes to each other. Today movies are violent toward every sex, race....etc.
And pretty is in the eyes of the beholder. I think today's movies are more "real" (for lack of a better word). And if each curl is in place and her make-up is flawless, the story is less believable. Many more female leads, in more energized, racy and violent movies, have to look more realistic, not pretty.

Because they had class and natural beauty a lot of stars today have nothing to them when you take off the make-up. Also these days we have air brushin which means you never actually know if someone really looks good where as in those days they didnt have that so you knew they were really gorgeous

Women were raised with different ideas at that time. A woman's "job" was to look good, get married, have babies, and raise the family. As such, far greater importance was placed on things like appearance. With women today being focused on other things like their own careers, appearance has taken a back seat. Or at least that's how I see it.

Because women were more natural then, everyone is so concerned about looking perfect they forgot that natural beauty is the best. I think the supermodel, stick thin, huge boobs, tight cheeks, perfect nose and so on is so fake and boring. Today there is an image everyone trys to adhere to and I say God made you that way for a reason besides taking care of yourself for health reasons leave your body alone.

The most important factor was the lighting, followed closely by makeup. They didn't look like that in real life.
Joan Crawford had her own personal lighting technician. Watch to see how many of her later films have a shadow going across her neck, and another across her forehead.
Plus, they had more meat on their bones, creating more curves, softer facial lines.

well, they just had a different style back then. they still are pretty, but back then they had a classic look and they really concentrated on being sophisticated and classy. i thin kthat had something to do with it, too. the way they carried themselves. the way their hair and makeup was done too was very dramatic. there were lots of tricks used back then. (and now). I think too that in today's society, we see so much plastic surgery, etc. that everyone starts to look the same. back then, individuals were unique.

The women in older movies are classy,
The women in newer movies are trashy.
That sums it all up.

Women were put on pedestals and praised and showed a high level of dignity.
