If we peg success to society's standards, then most of us will be be happy (as successful people make up a minority only). However, by giving our best shots to things we do, even if we fail, and we can derive sense of satisfaction in trying to do things well, then I would not rate that as failure.
Happiness is derived from our interaction with others, and from our sense of well-being. The feel-good factor sometimes can be derive from doing things well (not necessarily must it be the best in comparison to others). If I made a reply to an e-mail, and I proof-read it against typo/grammar errors, and derive satisfaction upon the fact that the mail was well-written, that to me could be a small achievement.
All of us are different individuals, and each has a different approach to life. Purposes, therefore, differ. Because of many structured institutions (such as schools, etc), we are conditioned to compete and to achieve better relative to others. Therefore, we conform to society's criteria for success - and many may think that is the purpose of life and of us slogging so hard for it.
Life needs not be a rat-race. Life is definitely not a competition, where it turns into an arena for me to covet your position, your office, etc.
Life is ours to live to what we ourselves believe to be fulfilling and meaningful. By doubling our income, will most of us be doubly happy? I doubt so.

Happiness and Success are not the Purpose of Life though one may experience both. The purpose of the human life is to be filled with the Holy Spirit whereby one may express and live God their Creator in daily life.

I know that my parents had me for that very reason to be happy and successful. Sometimes that is not the way of it but that is life now isnt it. Ups and downs, but for the most part I think it is our job to make life successful and happy for others as well as ourselves and this is the key, the people and places we are surrounded by and it is up to us to make that happen. After all we were given a free will.

Everyone has a different purpose/ idea.
Mine is to find happiness in myself and help bring about it in others.
I also want to make a difference in the world by creating something.. so I guess you could call that success?

Yes and No. happiness and success are emotional responses within life. The purpose of life is to create, whether it be creating life itself, death, or even the feelings of happiness and success.

Obtaining happiness is the single ultimate purpose of all life.
Success isn't a purpose of life because it depends on what your trying to succeed in.

The purpose of LIFE is what you make of your life since it is yours to decide. ⌂ Is just like that house I drew on the left. It is your house now live it the way you feel happy and satisfied.

I have neither one and my life feels like it has no purpose, so I guess in modern terms you are right. I was once succesful but unfornately it all got taken away from me. I seemed to be happy and more alive at that time. Now I am just a lonely, pathetic disabled person with little income, no friends, and hoping to have the nerve to kill myself, soon.
