so my parents are planning to get my sister, 10, a laptop for x-mas. I think this is a horrible idea!!! At 10, shes starting to grow up, figure things out... you know? i just have a feeling that she'll join myspace and Bubba and his gang will show up at our house one night....

She will not be using the computer for anything educational-- I know that she will also neglect homework and become internet addicted like I am... I just think it's really not a good idea. I think she should wait until she is old enough, and also deserves one!!

I got my laptop from my parents when I completed my first year of college......

please help out by giving me more reasons and or websites that will talk about internet safety.

thanks so much. i'm just worried about her protection.

No 10 year old needs a lap top. That's a good graduation gift tho but it's like giving a 4 year old a cell phone. What's the point? Does the family have a computer? If so there's no need but there are lots of spoiled kids out there so...

Let me give you the best answer!

Remember... that you are asking this question from people who would probably die if you took their computer away from them.
Internet junkies!!!
Yes, you are right! The computer is OK. The Internet is NOT. Would you give a 10 year old a XXX movie and say,"hey have a look at this." but that is exactly what they are doing. Here is a cigarette and a lighter and we know you that you wont smoke it!
Let me hand you a loaded gun, kock it, and don't pull the trigger OK. Let me just tell you, that your little sis is gonna be doing worse things on that Internet than U do. Why? She doesn't know any better. If your parents are that naive, then it's up to you to save her. Am I being dramatic? Maybe. What if I'm right?
I give my son Internet at 17. My 10 Y/O gets it, with close adult supervision.

im sorry if you feel this answer is a flame on you but instead of feeling a bit jealous that she is getting a computer earlier than you , why not try helping her to learn to use it for school instead of just goofing around on it?
You could also help out by teaching her about the perils of the Internet and SAFE Internet behavior.
try showing your parents some of the dangers and ask them to make sure she is supervised when using the computer.
I have four children , two much younger than 10 that use the family computer for school, and entertainment.. they are far more computer literate than the two teenagers i have by far because they have been taught and supervised while on the Internet.
try to see the good things that could come from her having the laptop and help her instead of focusing on the bad.

sounds a LITTLE like jealousy... "i got my laptop when i completed my first year of college....."

I'm not judging you... I'm remembering what it was like to watch my younger brothers get things from my parents while they were still kids while i had to work to get the same things AS AN ADULT... i remember measuring up everything...
who got a varsity coat and when
who got a class ring and when
who got a car and when
who got to date at what age
who had their prom paid for by mom & dad
who didn't get a beating for skipping school
who didn't get kicked out after graduation
(this list could go on FOREVER) IT'S SIBLING RIVALERY. i am NOT saying that you are not concerned about your sister's safety... YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO BE now days! teach your parents how to check your sister's "HISTORY" on her computer... and her cookies. OR talk to your parents about installing a nanny program to keep an eye on where she is and what she's talking about! there's only so much you can do to prepare your parents for the dangers that lurk out there in cyber-world!

CONGRATS on your years of hard work at college and BEST of luck with your assistance in your little sister's safety!

The only thing i can suggest is to have the computer in the living room or monitored by someone who knows how to find her history to make sure she's not looking for trouble

hmm try talking to her about it. scare her...buy movies that have ghosts or zombies climbing out of the PC at night...since she is 10, i think she would't dare use the lap top when she is alone. haha.

well i do not think it is a bad idea. there are so many things one can learn from the internet. yes, there are many bad things online, but you must also remember that the world also contains its bad things. its basically normal, there is no safe place in the world. just teach her what she can do and what she shouldn't do, she will do fine.

i totally agree that at ten she doesn't need a laptop. she is to young to know the hidden dangers in the internet. it is so easy for young ones to be exposed to sexual preditors. it's to easy to be exploited, easpecially if your ten years old

I don't think ANY kid should have their own computer until they are at least 16-18 and can pay for their own.
