For a CAD/CAM program like 3ds MAX, you'll want some fairly high end gear. I'll assume that you don't have access to a render farm and will be doing all your rendering on this machine, too. I'd choose a desktop PC, equipped with a Intel C2D E6400 or E6600, 2Gb DDR2 RAM (@667mhz), a good quality PCI-E mobo (like the MSI P965 Platnium), a 80Gb or 160Gb SATA2 system drive, a 300+Gb data drive, and a good video card. Because you're working in CAD programs, choose a nVidia Quadro video card that falls within your budget. Stay away from the Radeon and GeForce line up.
You should be able to save some money by cheaping out on your sound card, case, and optical drives.
Also, don't forget to get a good monitor (I've found widescreen or dual monitors work best for MAX), and a good mouse.

Depends. Apple is the best for business type graphic presentations by far. Games? Different story. Apple sucks in the gaming category.
A tricked out PC beats Apple hands down. Business or school, Apple. Games, PC. You didn't specify so hard to give you a specific answer. With games, Pentium 4 or Intel's latest and greatest; memory laden super dooper graphic card; super dooper sound card; big bus speed; lots of ram memory; the best big screened crt monitor, and you are really set for games if you can still afford it after buying the computer. Wink.

I'd recommend Apple for 3d animation and creation. Apple has software that byfar surpasses the capabilities of a PC platform, Apple is the standard for ART related software, because it has the capability to render colors exactly as they will be once mixed in CMYK format. which will allow you to completely customize your art down to the "exact" color. Not to mention it has an increased stability, as well as innate security being that it works different than a PC, which will give you a leg up in viral situations. No this does not mean that it is completely impervious to virual infections but the majority of viruses will bypass your system.
As far as hardware, I would recommend I would have to A G4 mac should do the trick for basic home use. I comes equipped with video and sound cards.

although, hardware is a factor in running a 3d animation, but the main component that drives it is the video card. I suggest that you buy a video card with a higher memory istalled on it. And must not forget that it must fits with your computer

Laptops tend to be slower overall. You'll want as much of a "workstation" quality of computer as possible. HP makes them: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF04a/12454-296719-296721-307907-296721.html
Dell makes them: http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/precn_670
Basically they have faster buses, multiple processors, loads of RAM, faster hard drives, mondo video cards, gigabit ethernet.
