Lie down and close your eyes you don't realize it but your body is getting more sleep than you perceive. You can be in stage one sleep and be fully aware of your surroundings. Unless you had caffeine or any other stimulants they cause insomnia.

I think the worse thing you can do if you're not able to get to sleep is lie awake and worry about not being able to get to sleep. You start off like this and then start worrying about other things.
So:
1. Admit defeat and give up trying so hard to get to sleep. This instantly makes me much more tired.
2. Do something totally non-introspective. Watching trash on TV (Channel 4 at three in the morning - far out, man), playing solitaire boggle, doing a sudoku.

I've got the same thing going on, so I'm on here answering questions. I'd try that.
I've also heard that warm milk has some sort of enzyme reaction to help you fall asleep.
If you don't have anything to do in the morning and can sleep in, try taking some nyquil. That stuff always knocks me out but I have a hard time getting up sooner than 8 hours after I take it.

I used to turn the TV to a golf channel cause there is only so much golf you can watch before you get so bored and have to turn away and sleep so you don't hear it anymore.

1. OTC Melatonin tablet before bedtime.
2. Check with your physician and pharmacist to see if it is ok for you to take, especially if you are taking other meds. You wouldn't want an interaction, or a nullification of another essential med.
