Basically, they are speaking of whatever environment you are involved with.
But if you pay close atttention to the lyrics, it is quite self explanatory.
For example: a woman you are involved with, romantically, gives off pheromones. An individual you care nothing about may be unpleasing to the olfactory senses. And then sometimes, it does not refer to your nose at all, be aware of what is going on around you, for what may transpire next, might not be to your liking.
