Personal preferance. I always played with a shorter stick than anyone I played with. Typically a defensiveman has a longer stick than a forward or a centerman. I played center and I liked the leverage I could get on the draws because of the shorter length. Plus my stick handling was better. Drawbacks to a shorter stick is it takes quite a bit off of your shot, but I was more of a set up guy anyway, so it didn't hinder my game. Play around with it till you find a length that you are most comfortable with

Max length is 63" as per USAHockey. Generally the stick should be between the players chin and nose when he is on skates. Shorter allows for more control as the puck is closer to the player.

It depends on how tall you are for the shaft of the stick. The blade has to be in regulation size, the other team may challenge how tall your stick is. But I do believe that it depends on how tall you are.

stand up straight on your skates, your stick should then reach up to between your chest and the bottom of your nose, easiest is to maintain chin hight. if the first part of the foot (the part closest to the shaft) wears of faster then the point of the foot, it's (still) too long.
