My doctor has told me on several different visits that Sudafed is fine to take during pregnancy, just the regular plain sudafed. Well I just read an article that was "approved by the medical advisory board" that said to avoid Phenylephrine (the active ingredient in sudafed) b/c it can affect blood flow to the placenta. ???? I don't understand the disconnect...anyone know anything? Thanks!

I think your dr is talking about sudafed p.c......this you can take.....but don't take the sudafed that only recently you need to have an id for....this one contains the phenlephrine....or pseudoepedrine you need to stay away from.........be careful.

my doctor told me i could use Sudafed also BUT THEN i had to switch doctors (when i was just 12 weeks pregnant) and THAT doctor told me NOT to use Sudafed for the same reason you are mentioning. i am so worried about the month i was taking Sudafed almost non-stop because i was so congested. SO FAR everything seems to be alright though (now at 17 weeks). my new doctor told me i can only take plain, old, regular Tylenol. he said it will cut back on the mucus that causes congestion... I did TRY the Tylenol and it didn't seem to help much BUT i was to afraid to go back to the Sudafed... so i suffered through the cold for safety sake! (i like my new doctor better than the old doctor so i tend to think he's right :)

GOOD LUCK with the cold... try sleeping propped up with a lot of pillows if all else fails!

I had a cold during my fifth month and the doctor prescribed the same but made me choose between sudafed and regular benadryl. I opted to take benadryl instead (but only once during day and once during the night instead of every 6 hours). I think it's fine, just take it as recommended and/or less frequent.

I also got a humidifier and a vicks vaporizer in my room which really helped. Also, I propped my head up with an extra pillow to help me breathe. Just to let you know, the cold will lift after two weeks. You're bound to get better, although if your mucus turns yellow or green, you might need antibiotics so take plenty of rest and take it easy so as not to make your cold worse.

I'm at 36 weeks and got some weird cold that's going around my area apparently. My dr told me the only things I could take were plain old Sudafed and a cough syrup like Robitussim DM... Trust your dr. He wouldn't tell you to take something that would hurt your baby.

there are teas and things you can take that will have a cleaner effect on you than sudafed so I would avoid it and try some mint and chamomile. Things like that are tasty too.

Talk to a pharmacist. If you wan't real expertise talk to a pharmacy that has the capability of formulating drugs. In other words, a Professional pharmacy as opposed to a Commercial Pharmacy.

Better to be on the safe side - I'd avoid taking any medications unless ABSOLUTELY NECCESSARY!!! Everything you take, your baby takes - and with all that growth going on with the baby, you never know what could happen. I hope you feel better soon!

I have to say that I think it is better, in this case, to err on the side of caution. If there is some way to avoid taking medications of any kind while pregnant it is probably better to do so.
