Does the arota and viena cava sit side by side or one in front of the other?

Vena cava and Aorta are parallel near to the heart but, they change courses soon.

The vena cava are located on the right side thorax while the aorta is located on the left side. This is not to say that they line exactly in the same horizontal plane, but every body is slightly different.
