Before or after the president died?

Could be Franklin Pierce's wife - on their way to Washington for his inauguration their only living child was killed in a train accident before their eyes. His wife was understandably distraught after that.

Or Mary Todd Lincoln is a good choice - she was not the most mentally stable person, and also lost a young son during the course of Lincoln's presidency. She never recovered from her husband's death, either.

I have seen records that Mary Todd Lincoln wore only black but I don't know if any before her did that. Good Luck!
