Unfortuantely for me, we didn't have an AP History class way back when I was in school, so I am not sure how well I could have done, but I seem to have done pretty well with just a regular history class. So, you should do very well. I plan on going back to college in January and major in History. I hope I do well.

Lots of the answers have covered lots of the aspects of this but as a history student and teacher I think I can add something.

The question is why were you good at history- were you good because you could remember lots of facts or were you good because you can understand the past. Most university history especially at a high level is about empathy- the ability to understand other people and why they do what they do- if you can do that you'll be good, if not you'll be alright but will never do brilliantly. Don't specialise too early and a last warning don't stay too modern- go against your instincts and go backwards in time, try other periods and other cultures and see how you acclimatise. Personally I'd reccomend you have a go at some proper history books and see how you like them before you do it at Uni, read some Isaiah Berlin, or some Jonathan Scott and see what you think. http://gracchii.blogspot.com

Doing well is very important, and I'm going to assume that you also enjoyed that class.
I think that you will do well as a history major. Yet keep in mind that history majors (as far as I know, and you many want to check on this statement) usually have an era or time period in which they concentrate. Most of the history professors I met in college specialized in various time periods; everything from the ancient world, to early America, ...and some even selected specific regions of the world. I guess my point is that as a history major, you'll also get to select a time period and/or a geographic part of the world in which to concentrate. Of course along with that, I'm sure your future university will make sure you're still an overall history "buff."

Have fun and go for it!

good luck

By itself, doing well in AP History will not mean you will succeed as a History major--but it is likely to mean you might enjoy college level history courses. There are many factors to success in college courses particularly the ability to interpret and synthesize data, draw conclusions, take and defend positions, learn to write effective answers to essay questions, and to write engaging, informative term papers with interesting perspectives on historical events & themes. Those skills are what will indeed make for success as a History major. Good luck to you!

Doing well is a sign of your hard work, your enjoyment of the material, or both. I am a history major and I love it--so, naturally, I encourage you to be one if you like history. It's an endlessly interesting field of study and it provides you with diverse post-graduate possibilities. Along with a general interest in history, good writing skills, analytical skills, and a cursory interest in philosophy, religion, sociology, and politics (or all four, ideally!) would be helpful to you. However, one can add almost any secondary interest to an interest in history and obtain unique insight into a particular--perhaps obscure--area. If you like biology, for example, you can do history of the environment, different space programs, conservation movements. If you're really into current events, you can do contemporary history. If you know a lot about pop culture, you can do history-oriented work in that area, too. The very nature of history means it has endless possibilities in every area: in research or in historiography. :)

If you do well in any AP class, it's a good sign that you'll do well in whatever major you select. Your question makes me believe that you're not sure what major you want. I would suggest you start college undecided and take your general education classes (the required maths, sciences, humanities, etc for any degree), but select classes that fascinate you and fit the general education requirements. From there you'll have a better idea what you have a passion for and you can then take all classes that are required for the major you select.

only if being a history major is what you really want. Even if you are really talented at something, its easy to fail at it if you dont have a real passion for it. Ask yourself this...Am i considering history as a major because I really love history or because AP US history was easy and I got good grades in it? If you love it then do it, if you just want to do it just to get good grades, then look deeper into yourself and find what you really want to do.

Probably. More importantly, do you enjoy reading forty pages a night and writing long papers? If you are a good writer and interested in the subject matter, you will succeed.
