You should try the Myth Series by Robert Aspirin. Sci/Fi - Fantasy with humor. It is a reallt entertaining series of about 8 or so books. Also the Thieve's World Series by same author is good, a dark type fantasy series (actually collections of short stories by different authors all tied together to make up a coherent story)

Try Piers Anthony's Apprentice Adept series, it combines fantasy and sci-fi that takes place in interesting worlds. Arthur C. Clarke is a great author, try 'Songs Of Distant Earth'
Peter Watts 'Starfish' is a different approach and look for
Isaac Asimov.
Even though it wasn't groundbreaking, I enjoyed The Star Of the guardians series by Margaret Weis. Best luck.
Fantasy wise David Eddings is a great author, Belgariad/Mallorean series is great. Piers Anthony is another one, Xanth series is funny if you don't mind a pun filled world.

How 'bout THE BLACKGLOOM BOUNTY? It's a medieval fantasy series. Lots of magic, mysticism and mayhem. It has a smart young Irish lass and a Scot as co-main characters. Sort of a Braveheart meets LOTR...
