preferably books that aren't part of a series (like harry potter or the like) and that are deeper, and a bit more mature. i'm looking for a good read.

I love The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway.
The book are suffused with wit and wisdom in language.
And not too long. After reading, you will get some strength of life.

One of my favorite books was written by a German author a few years ago by the name of Patrick Suskind. In fact the novel named "Perfume" created a sensation around the world when first published."Perfume" succeeds so well because the premise is so startlingly novel. It's about olfactory genius in 18th-century Paris who can make a fortune creating perfumes more complicated and subtle than any ever made, but unfortunately he is a sociopathic monster. A very mature international novel for brilliant cocktail conversation among well read friends.

Anything by Dostoevsky. you can't find anything deaper than his works.
first try with the best - The Brothers Karamazov, than read The Idiot, Crime and Punishment, Notes from the Underground, and you must finish with The Diary of the Writer. There are many more books by Dostoevsky, but I can't think of their english names, sorry.
But you must read some of his works, otherwise your life will be spent without getting the wissdom of the gratest man that ever lived.
I hope i helped you find a good read, and Fyodor will help you get smarter and more profund.

"The Alienist" by Caleb Carr.........has alot of historical value too.......takes place in Manhattan during the turn of the century.....1890's.....great read.
Want something that is quite different? And Existential? How about "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand.
There's a book that came out in the late 70's called "Evergreen" was quite a tear jerker for sure but one of the best books I've ever read.........I think Belva Plain wrote it......also it was a movie.

Wuthering Heights, It's heart wrenching, compelling, it makes you wonder who is really the bad person, or is everyone just been hurt so much, that that is the only means they have of coping. When Kathy dies, Heathcliff begs her spirit to haunt him, just to keep her close to him. Beautiful.
