iPods, PSPs, cool cars, big TVs, nice cell phones, new computers, the latest fashions, the next newest computers... the list goes on and on. There is SO much cool stuff out there, and it seems like they want us to think that we should own all of it. Who can really afford to pay for all this stuff without going into massive debt? Is the hip, tech-saavy american just a myth? or am I just poor?

I am probably the last one to buy everything. I just finally broke down and got a cell phone. I like to look at all the cool stuff but never buy.

The advertisers are busy trying to create the myth that 'everyone' has all that stuff. But really, even if everyone DID have it all, how would you pack it around? We'd be hung like Christmas trees with gadgets sticking out of every pocket. And of course, we all know that in three months it will all be obsolete and we'll have to go out and buy a whole new round of stuff.
I don't buy the myth, and it sounds like you don't either. And there is a difference between being poor and not wanting to buy into something that is patently outrageous.

Yeah well Im only 19 and Im not interested in those things and I feel that I wont be even when I become rich after college. I just think those things dont matter much, well atleast not to me. I have a cheap cricket that doesnt even have a camera on it...now I could have one like that but I chose not to. As long as the phone works, Im fine, I dont need to spend extra money on the fancy hoobla booblas lol :)

well most of the people with those incredible (and incredibly expensive) computers are KIDS. they're the ones playing the online games, and they got the computer from their parents, who have good careers. it's not poor college students buying all this crap. it's the ones with rich parents.

as for me, i'm content with yesterday's technology... you won't see me rushing out to the store to buy a new playstation 3 or xbox 360. it's ridiculous to spend that much money on toys.

Depends how well you budget... but yes advertising these days works on shame. Eg. "You should be ashamed if you don't have an iPod."

It makes it hard for people who can't afford these things because it makes them look like less of a person! But that's society today... it's not the person, it's the stuff they have.

mm...well i have some of that stuff. i guess because everyone just wants to keep up with the latest technology and no one wants to get left behind, so many people spend lots of money on that kind of stuff. for me though, i only got them because they're useful to me. of course if you waste your money excessively you would go into massive debt...

I would have to say I'm in the middle. It takes a lot to go and spend all that money on something but you get so excited when you first have it that its kind of worth it. It does hurt the pocket but its nice to treat yourself every once in a while.

No....the hip tec-savvy American is alive and well........but not with me........only a few items on your list.......I have family members who live that American dream I guess you would call it....the way they spend money in my opinion is just awful.......yes, and their children have the good life for sure.......they do grow up to expect everything it seems. Very sad really.
