I'm planning a trip back home for the holidays and one of my flight options means a 2.5hr layover in Japan. I wouldn't need a visa to enter so I figure, if the city's not too far from the airport, I could head into town for lunch and to see what the place is like for a bit (instead of just hanging out at the airport during that time). But I don't know if doing so would be worth it due to time constraints.

By the City, do you mean Tokyo, or Narita City?

Either way, you probably won't have time to really even leave the airport, since going back through customs might take just as long.

It's about 1.5 hours by train or bus from NRT airport to Tokyo, so that's out.

You can take the train to Narita City, which leaves every 1/2 hour and takes 10-15 minutes (depending on which terminal you leave from). The return train arrives either 40 or 70 minutes later (also every 1/2 hour).

I think given this, you should just hang out at the airport, which is one of the nicer ones. Feel free to explore.

P.S. - FlyGuy has no idea what he's talking about. It costs about $45 one way into Tokyo, and about $5 one way into Narita. And neither takes 30 minutes.

There's a "skyliner" monorail that takes... ummmm... I think it was like 90 minutes. To be on the safe side, call it 2 hours. But you should be able to get from Narita to the line that circles the centre of Tokyo in about 90 minutes. It will take less if you want to just hit the outskirts of the city. Narita itself is in the countryside for the precise reason that it's dangerous to have an airport near a highly populated area, so you need to expect to spend at LEAST 70 minutes round-trip just getting someplace interesting. You could ask around- at certain subway stations, there are huge underground shopping malls, and there might be one within 30 minutes of Narita.

Some of the skyliner's route is above ground... I'll even hazard that most of it is. I don't really remember. But, it's definitely your cheapest and fastest option.

But, if you only have 2.5 hours, I wouldn't push it. It really is a pity though, because it would be wonderful to see a bit of the city. Perhaps it's not too late to work things so that you have a more generous layover?

If you have only 2 1/2 hours, you're better off waiting at the airport for your connecting flight. If you had more time on your hands, and you wanted to explore a bit, the best place to go would be Narita city. You can take a Keisei Line train which departs from the airport every 20 minutes (A Tokkyu train, NOT the Skyliner). The train fare is 250 yen each way.

Don't forget, you need extra time when you come back to the airport to go through security screenings, immigration and customs again.

There's no way you could get to Tokyo and still make your flight. You would be lucky to make it to Narita city and back. Best to kill time at the airport if you only have 2.5 hours-you have to pass through security just to get into Narita Airport.

Forget Tokyo, it's an hour by Skyliner. Narita city is about 15 minutes away. You might pop over there and see the temple and pagoda but that's about it

It takes about an hour to get from NRT to the City Center say in Rappongi. I did that once by bus to get to the airport.

Don't do it...depending on the time of day, it might take you an hour, it might(as the other respondant told you) take upwards of 1.5 hours. And, there is the customs and availability of taxis(VERY expensive) or busses. Do it another time, or stay over and catch your flight the next day.

It takes about 30 minutes to the centre of the city! It is also fairly exspensive! The ride on basically what Americans would consider a subway train is about $22US each way, and that just gets you to the city!
