What hippies believe or believed is like asking what Christians believe. There are all sorts of variations. For some it was just a Bohemian live style, being more involved in the arts and meeting people than earning a living. For others, it was a chance for "free love", and getting high. For some it was revolutionary.

Listen to Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention's album, "We're Only In It For The Money." There are some good tunes, and some funny commentaries on the San Francisco hippie movement.

Hippies came about in the late 50's early 60s and was a popular culture up till the end of the Vietnam war.
The Hippie culture started in SanFrancisco and soon spread across the United States.San Francisco was seen as the mecca where hippies could live free from redicule and free from the world that was for war, racism, fascism, ect. Many hippies , especially men, fled to Canada to avoid the draft.
Hippies lived on the aspect of free love, love for every human being and living creature, many would go to any extreme to show their want for a true life of personal freedom and mind expansion.
Sex with strangers and multiple partners , including group sex was common. The use of mind altering chemicals was everywhere..marijuana, cocain, herion, and especially acid..the psychedelic trip was acheived often and for days at a time. Protesting the war and the government was the reason for huge rallys and festivals. Many hippies tried to live off the land without working and paying taxes, so many lived together in small apartments, some in large communes.
There is alot more to tell, but its late and I would run out of spce to type.
Im only 29, but I have family members who were close to my age back then and and were active in the "hippy" movement

EVEN in commercials.SOME of the hippies were known as the baby boomers.THEy believed in LOVE not war. THEy were against war and the viet nam war.A lot of baby boomers are in poor health because of the DRUG use, AND some are dead.
