Get yourself a squirt bottle full of water. When they go for the tree, or even get near it, nail 'em with the water. Pretty soon you can just make the squirt bottle sound and they will move away from anything.

We hang a bell in the tree. As soon as our cat starts climbing, we know. It doesn't always prevent her, but she gets the message when we punish her and toss her in th basement.

Thats like asking how do you get a cat to do anything! Good luck - my cats go "wild" and hang out in the tree every year- if they aren't doing it when you see them they are just doing it when you aren't there! --- by the way cats love mint and mine love toothpaste- and candycanes - catnip is in the mint family

cats cant stand the smell of toothpaste. put some toothpaste on the low-lying branches (inconspicuously, so your tree doesn't look funny!) so they turn-tail whenever getting near!
