My son is a little over 2 months, 13 lbs., 23 inches long. I am weaning him from breastfeeding because I am returning to work. I know breast milk is best but I'm too tied down. I'm currently mixing half breast milk and half formula to ease him into drinking strictly formula. He tends to eat between 2-3 ounces every 2 hours. Is that accurate?

That sounds perfectly normal. The general guideline for feeding a 2 month old is 6-8 feedings daily of 4-5 oz / 125-150 ml per feeding. Click here for my webpage on "Feeding and Nutrition Guide" http://ca.geocities.com/__geri/FeedingAndNutritionGuide.xls

Yeah what you are doing seems fine Let the baby eat what he wants when he wants You cant have a set schedule when you feed the baby He wil let you know how much he wants to eat and when he wants to eat. My son weighed 8lbs 14oz when he was born and he is now 15lbs 1oz at four months old My pedicatrican said that my son is fine its just that some babies are in the higher percentile of growth than other babies. My son now eats 4 to 8 oz of formula every 3-4 hours and is prefectly normal My little boy didnt take to breastfeeding at all and was on formula from 2 weeks old until two weeks ago and at age 3 and a half months started eating baby cereal

That's about right, at least by what I had to go through with my daughter. But every baby is different, especially in appetite. I think 2 oz is little though, 3 oz would be better. Here's the advice I was given by my hospital's mom support group....If you want to extend the period, when he gets hungry wait 5 minutes...and then the next time, wait a little longer. That way, he will drink more and can wait a little longer for the next feeding.

Feed him when he is hungry until he has had enough. You cannot make a baby take more than he needs and he will soon tell you if its not enough. Each baby is different.

Why can you not just express the milk for his feeds and store it in the fridge and send it with him to daycare when you return to work? Breast milk IS best and the longer they have it the better for the child. If you are expressing and feeding then you will see for yourself what he needs.

I understand economics and the need to return to work but to remove your child from breast milk for convenience I do not understand.

yeah thats alright but the normal amount for a formula baby is around 5oz every 3 hours. My babies doctor was amazed that my baby ate over 7 oz every 4 hours. but 5 every 3 hours is normal. thats what my doctor suggested for me. but if he wants to eat more often give it to him. :D

First you should not mix formula & breast milk, all peds. will tell you that is a definate NO. 2nd, feed him as much and as often as he wants it, that is what he gets when he nursed!
